Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation   Celebrating 10 Years

A message from the CEO of Salt + Light Catholic Media Foundation
December, 2012
Toronto, Canada

Dear friends of Salt + Light,
Fr. Thomas Rosica, CSBIt is hard to believe that we began this bold media initiative ten years ago! Born on the wings of World Youth Day 2002, Salt + Light Television carried forward the tremendous dynamism and energy of that blessed event that touched the people of Canada and of many countries so deeply. Our network is really a living tribute to Pope John Paul II! How happy Blessed John Paul II must be as he continues to watch over Salt + Light "from the window" of the Father's House!
Over the past decade, our small media operation, the fruit of the dreams and labors of Gaetano Gagliano and his marvelous family, has grown from a few programs in Italian language to a highly developed media network that operates on numerous platforms and reaches far beyond the borders of Canada. Many generous individuals, communities and organizations have recognized the great value of Salt + Light and have been very generous with us!
Salt + Light is not only a brand of programs, it is a way of looking at, understanding and becoming the Church that is truly "alive and young." The greatest feature of Salt + Light are the young men and women from many countries who form the core team of producers, writers, directors, artists, designers, media technicians, and television hosts. The joy of my life has been to work closely with this lot—they have kept me young, hopeful, faithful and really alive amidst the massive challenges that face us each day.
What better way to mark the beginning of our tenth year of existence than with this marvelous Christmas concert featuring "The Priests" of Ireland! The Priests are not only masterful singers, but they are also Gospel artists transmitting to us the language of beauty and hope. In the concluding message of the recent Vatican Synod on the New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith, the synod Fathers spoke these words:
We also want to thank men and women involved in another expression of the human genius, art in its various forms, from the most ancient to the most recent. We recognize in works of art a particularly meaningful way of expressing spirituality inasmuch as they strive to embody humanity's attraction to beauty. We are grateful when artists through their beautiful creations bring out the beauty of God's face and that of his creatures. The way of beauty is a particularly effective path of the new evangelization.
This year is a year to celebrate and give thanks to God for all that we have so generously received over the past decade. It is a time to repeat our "yes" to the Lord as we continue working with him in producing works of art, beauty, faith, hope and joy for the world. Salt + Light is a powerful instrument of and witness to the new evangelization!
We cannot continue our work without your friendship, prayers and generosity. We remember you very often with gratitude in our studio chapel of the Holy Cross. Thank you for being here with us this evening in Toronto! May the coming Christ of Advent fill you with joy and peace, and may the Holy Child of Bethlehem bless you and your families and loved ones at Christmas and throughout the New Year.
Let us pray for one another as we strive to bring the flavor of the Gospel and the light of Christ to a waiting world!
With deep gratitude,
Baby
Fr. Thomas Rosica, C.S.B.,
CEO, Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation
President and Vice Chancellor, Assumption University of Windsor

Letters from our friends
Cardinal Thomas Collins, Archbishop of Toronto
For over ten years now Salt and Light has been engaged in a key area of evangelization, using modern media to communicate the Gospel. The team at Salt and Light is much to be commended for their dedication to the mission of evangelization, and for their creative and technical expertise which is clearly evident in the excellent work which they have produced over the past decade.
The light of Christ shines through the saints, and Salt and Light has produced numerous DVDs that tell their story to inspire and guide us all in our lives of discipleship. On television, radio, and the internet Salt and Light has spread the Gospel in this modern world. In my own ministry as a bishop, proclaiming the Word of God, I am truly grateful for the assistance which Salt and Light provides in televising the celebration of Lectio Divina each month at St Michael's cathedral in Toronto, which allows many to participate in this ancient form of scriptural prayer.
May God abundantly bless all who have devoted their lives so selflessly to the evangelizing mission of Salt and Light over the past ten years.
Thomas Cardinal Collins
Archbishop of Toronto

National Catholic Register: By: John L. Allen Jr.
... Anyone who's heard me on the lecture circuit knows that one of my standard rants is the need to get past the tribal warfare that sometimes plagues Catholic life, pitting liberals against conservatives, pro-lifers against peace-and-justice people, movements against diocesan structures, and on and on.
All these tribes bring something valuable to the table, so the key isn't to suppress them. It's to foster the tribalism of the Iroquois Confederacy rather than the Balkans -- a spirit of cooperation, not internal combat.
Whenever I roll out that argument, somebody asks: Where do you see it happening?
One compelling for-instance is the Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation in Canada, founded by Basilian Fr. Thomas Rosica, who first came to prominence as the CEO of World Youth Day in Toronto in 2002. (Rosica was born in Rochester, N.Y., but has long been based in Canada.)
Salt and Light celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2013. In an era when some religious media outlets have copied the business model of much secular journalism -- i.e., feeding the prejudices of a particular tribe -- Salt and Light's success suggests there's actually a market for a more non-ideological approach open to a variety of instincts and voices.
Launched in 2003, Salt and Light's cornerstone TV programming is now available in 2.6 million homes in Canada and is streamed 24/7 on the Internet. Their website boasts about 2,500 videos available on demand, including 400 in Chinese. They've got a radio service, a blog, a glossy four-color semiannual magazine with a circulation around 90,000, and even an iPhone and Android app. They've also produced well-received documentaries on Catholic subjects that get wide play beyond their own platforms.
Rosica has a knack for attracting talented, energetic young Catholics to work at Salt and Light, people who are deeply faithful but without a chip on their shoulder -- the same approach he employed for World Youth Day. Here's a recent feature on Rosica in a secular Canadian magazine, which captures some of the flavor of the place.
Among the messages Rosica has received to mark the anniversary is a Dec. 1 letter from Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. bishops' conference, expressing hope that "as you continue to make inroads into the United States ... the church in the USA will welcome Salt and Light with open arms."
It will be interesting to see if American Catholic arms are indeed opened wide to Salt and Light in 2013, during its anniversary year. That might be good news not only for the network, but for a sometimes badly divided American church.... read the complete article
... read more

This moving documentary follows St. Kateri's incredible journey of deep faith, heroic sacrifice and love of Christ. Featuring many who have been touched by her -including the little boy who received the miraculous healing that led to her canonization- the film shows that no one is too simple or too young to follow Christ, and that this woman, whose face was scarred and vision was weak, is still a source of Grace and healing for all.

Creation Creation
Why should we care for the environment? This is the question that Salt + Light, in partnership with the Environmental Science and Studies Department of the University Of St. Thomas in Houston, addresses with this new six-part documentary series.
