The role of women in the Catholic Church is a hotly debated question. Although some important writings have come from the Church, there's still a substantial gap between what is written about women and what people commonly perceive.
Like most people I think, when asked where you see women doing great work in the Church today you'd likely conjure up an image of a heroic woman like Mother Teresa.
But, if you were to be more specific and ask a person to give a few examples of lay women making a difference in the Church, I bet you'd see a lot more blank stares.
But why? With the majority of women in the Church having chosen the lay vocation why is it so difficult to point to examples of lay women making important contributions to the life of the Church?
This begs the question, what's a woman's place in the Catholic Church look like? Do women really have a place?
