Aboard the papal flight, the Pope spoke to journalists, about his fear of a return to the use of nuclear weapons.  He shared with everyone on the plane a photo taken in 1945, of a Japanese boy in Nagasaki waiting at a crematorium to bury his baby brother, with the words: ‘the fruits of war’ printed on the back, alongside his signature.   The Holy Father said he was very moved by the image and wanted to share it, because of his fears that the world is moving once again, towards the use of nuclear weapons. This time he travels to Chile and Peru where he hopes to bring a message of hope and comfort to people on the margins of society, particularly the indigenous people. In Zambia, a cholera epidemic that threatens the lives of more than 14 million people has forced the country’s government, to ban all church services in their capital city of Lusaka. The Zambian government decreed earlier this week, that all gatherings of every nature, including church services, are banned in areas most affected by the epidemic. The ban, they say, is aimed at curbing the spread of the disease and to help make current treatment initiatives more effective. ...read more
Tomorrow, the Polish parliament will vote on an abortion policy that will either increase access to pregnancy termination or significantly reduce it. The government is trying to introduce an “abortion on request” legislation which will make pregnancy termination a more readily available option. ...read more
