The canonization of popes John XXIII and John Paul II together in one, historic ceremony was a moment of great joy and thanksgiving for the universal Church. But it was also an opportunity to reflect on the history of the past fifty years, namely, the Second Vatican Council and its ongoing implementation. In this extended interview from Rome, renowned Vatican analyst Gerard O'Connell sits down with Salt and Light to discuss the historical context, the hopes and the challenges to the developing pontificate of Pope Francis as two of his predecessors ascend the thrones of heaven.
*At the recent Consistory of Cardinals, Pope Francis conferred the Cardinals’ berretta first on the new Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and second, on Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri, the new Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops.  This clearly indicates the priority Pope Francis is giving to the Synod of Bishops, which was one of the first fruits of the Second Vatican Council.
