Eternal Glass

Around ten months ago, I jumped into a new venture.
I made a large mosaic mirror with my husband.  We bought broken coloured glass from a local arts and crafts store for the frame.  We were very happy with our final product.  But imagine if I had access to the finest glass from Europe!
That’s the kind of access Andrew McCausland has.
Last week, our Salt + Light crew visited the oldest stained glass studio in North America – Robert McCausland Limited in Etobicoke, Ontario.  Andrew McCausland’s great-grandfather Joseph McCausland founded it in 1856, and it’s been handed down through five generations of McCauslands so far.  Andrew took over as president in 1977 and continues to take pride in their work.  Their studio uses only the finest hand-blown glass purchased from Europe.  At one point, they had made 2/3 of all the stained glass windows in Canada!  From conception to installation, each window takes great precision and patience.  What starts off as a watercolour sketch is cut from glass, painted, placed in fire, leaded, and installed – a work that takes many months.  Andrew McCausland calls it an eternal work of art because when they create a stained glass window, it is meant to last forever (pending repairs, of course).
Robert McCausland Limited created the beautiful stained glass windows of St. Peter’s Seminary in London, Ontario.
In May of this year, Salt + Light will premiere a four-part series based on the book Panes of Glory by Fr. Michael Prieur.  In this book, Fr. Prieur highlights the stained glass windows of St. Peter’s Seminary, praising the work of the artists and the Gospel message each window holds for us.
