Holy Novenas!

Mary Rose Bacani Valenti

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

My younger sister just had a baby girl (Emma, the first grandchild for my parents) this past Sunday.  I learned earlier from my mom that she has been praying the Rosary Novena for Emma’s safe delivery.
The Rosary What???   I asked my mom.  I’ve heard of Novenas to St. Therese, to St. Joseph, to St. Anne, but not The Rosary Novena!!!
The Rosary Novena consists of five decades of the Rosary each day for 27 days in petition; then immediately after, five decades each day for 27 days in thanksgiving, whether or not you received your request.  And you go each day from Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, Glorious, and then begin the cycle again.
Here’s the origin of what I call the Super-Long Novena, with re-worded excerpts taken from “The Rosary, My Treasure”, Benedictine Convent, Clyde, Mo.:
“On February 16, 1884, Commander Agrelli’s daughter Fortuna started a novena of Rosaries with relatives for healing from her afflictions.  On March 3rd, the Queen of the Holy Rosary appeared to her, with the divine Child on her lap, a Rosary in her hand, and with St. Dominic and St. Catherine accompanying her.
Fortuna looked to Our Lady and invoked her aid:  ‘Queen of the Holy Rosary, be gracious to me; restore me to health!’
Our Lady said:  ‘Since thou hast called me by that title so pleasing to me, “Queen of the Holy Rosary,” I can no longer refuse the favour thou dost petition; for this name is most precious and dear to me.’  And she added:  ‘Whoever desires to obtain favours from me should make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary, and three novenas in thanksgiving.’
This miracle of the Rosary made a very deep impression on Pope Leo XIII, and greatly contributed to the fact that in so many letters he urged all Christians to love the Rosary and say it fervently.”
I started my Rosary Novena on October 1st during this month of the Rosary, for the many special petitions I hold in my heart.  It’s actually been something to look forward to during my morning bus and subway rides to work – talking to my Mother.
