Welcome to S+L’s Weekly News Round-Up. As part of my job in bringing you the latest Catholic news on Perspectives Daily, I come across many interesting stories on a daily basis. Some of them I'll cover on my show and the others I’d like to share with you on this blog. This weekly column is where I’ll point out some of the more interesting news pieces, stories, or videos that I've come across over the past few days! Enjoy!

 

Now this is too funny not to share. A video went viral last week that showed a giant statue of the Virgin Mary floating down a flooded street in The Canary Islands. What are the chances of that happening?

Nossa Senhora passeando em meio a uma enchente? Nas Ilhas Canárias, a devoção à Nossa Senhora da Candelária (Virgem Morena) é muito tradicional e toda a cidade se enfeita para celebrar a festa em honra à Maria Santíssima. Mas em decorrência das fortes chuvas, uma das imagens acabou se despregando e “passeou” pela chuva. Cada 2 de fevereiro e 15 de agosto milhares de peregrinos de todas as partes das Ilhas Canárias e em outras partes da Espanha, em peregrinação ao santuário para celebrar a festa em honra da padroeira das Ilhas Canárias. Em fevereiro destaca a Procissão das Velas e agosto a Encenação da Aparição da Virgem. Na nossa vida também, em meios às tempestades e enchentes, nossa Mãe sempre está presente. Tem alguém que mora nas Canárias? Rs • (Não sabemos se é montagem, mas é bonitinho ??)

Now check out the real video. It's not quite the same thing. So I guess the chance of something like that actually happening is zero. Ever wonder what Jesus would say to you if you bumped into him at your local parish? Well, Catholic comedian Jim Gaffigan is at it again with a video that again is just too funny not to share. A Pope Francis gargolye? The Catholic cathedral in Cologne, Germany, has a new gargoyle statue that adorns its main Gothic entrance. On the cathedral's official Facebook page, they write: "Discovered yet? Pope Francis is now at Cologne Cathedral! For a week there is a decorative gargoyle with the face of Pope Francis over the main portal of the Cologne Cathedral. You can see the Holy Father in the row of figures on the right, above King Solomon." What an odd way of immortalizing the leader of the Catholic Church. National Catholic Reporter has the entire story here. Last week on Nov 9th, the church celebrated the Feast of the Dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica. It's a feast day on which we as Catholics remember and celebrate the Basilica's dedication. Normally Catholics celebrate saints or other special liturgical events. But a building? Epic Pew published this great article on why Catholics celebrate the dedication of that specific church on that day. Read all about it here. World Youth Day 2019 is just two months away, and as we get closer to the date, more behind-the-scenes information about the event is becoming available.
