In solidarity with Connecticut

Andrew Santos

Friday, December 14, 2012

Earlier today, Salt + Light (together with the world) heard the devastating news out of Connecticut.  There was a shooting at an elementary school that has left 27 people dead, including 18 children. Exact numbers have yet to be released. This could quite possibly be one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history, even beyond the Columbine shooting in 1999.
As we write this, we are overcome with a deep sense of sadness. Momentarily, our staff will gather collectively in our Holy Cross Chapel to mark a moment of silence and to pray as a community for those affected by this senseless tragedy.
As we continue in this season of Advent and prepare for the birth of our Saviour this Christmas, let us pray for the consolation of these families in which this Christmas will be especially hard. May they find a sense of peace and comfort and know that Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God promised to us is indeed Emmanuel -- meaning "God with us".
In the words of Jim and Kaye Johns, our Salt + Light team prays,
Father, you're close to people whose hearts are breaking, those who are discouraged and have given up hope. May You who see their troubles and grief respond when they cry out. When they're hurting, help them find their joy in You, for your joy will be their strength. Help them to trust You as their God of hope. Fill them with Your joy, peace, and hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
