Taking care of God’s creation

Should we, as Catholics, worry about ecology? Didn'  God give us the earth to take care of and use it responsibly?
In his message for the World Day of Peace in 2010, Pope Benedict XVI chose the theme If You Want to Cultivate Peace, Protect Creation. In this message he says “‘creation is the beginning and the foundation of all God’s works’, and its preservation has now become essential for the pacific coexistence of mankind. Man’s inhumanity to man has given rise to numerous threats to peace and to authentic and integral human development – wars, international and regional conflicts, acts of terrorism, and violations of human rights. Yet no less troubling are the threats arising from the neglect – if not downright misuse – of the earth and the natural goods that God has given us.”
So His Holiness is telling us it is a duty of every Catholic to care for the planet and make efforts to preserve what God created for us with love. Think of what happens when someone gives you a gift.  You try to take care of it so the person in question will be happy because that gift was important to you. The same happens with the earth God created. By taking good care of it we are pleasing God because we take good care of the gift he gave us.
To speak about the relation between the Church and ecology Deacon Pedro invites Sr. Damien-Marie Savino FSE, Chair of the Department of Environmental Science and Studies of the University of St. Thomas.
