This morning in Vatican City, His Holiness Pope Francis held his weekly General Audience in St. Peter’s Square. Arriving by pope mobile, the Holy Father spent over 20 minutes riding through the crowds greeting pilgrims and blessing children. He then ascended the steps of the basilica and opened the general audience. After the gospel was proclaimed in a several languages, the Holy Father spoke to the tens of thousands gathered. Here is a summary of his words in English.
Yesterday, the Chairman of the CCCB’s Human Rights Committee, issued an urgent letter to Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird. In the letter, His Excellency Bishop François Lapierre, Bishop of Saint-Hyacinthe, asked that the Canadian government to do everything within its power, to urge the government of Sudan to release from prison Meriam Yehya Ibrahim. She is a young mother who has been sentenced to death as well as 100 lashes for apostasy and adultery, following her recently conversion from Islam to Christianity. She is currently imprisoned with her pre-maturely born child, waiting for her sentence to be carried out. In addition to asking for her release, Bishop Lapierre asked the Government of Canada to urge Sudan, to respect the right and freedom of creed and of worship.
