Pope Francis as a Boy: A Poem

March 15, 2017
Written by and illustrated by Chiara Valenti, aged 6.

When Pope Francis was a boy
Did he throw a toy?

Did he say "NO WAY!"
When it was time to pray?

Now that he's Pope
he doesn't say "nope"to the Cross he has to carry
for Love of Jesus and Mary.

Deacon Pedro and Richard Valenti spent a little time sharing with Richard's children about Pope Francis and his anniversary. This poem came out of that conversation.
Deacon Pedro and Richard say, "One of the things we appreciate about Pope Francis is the fact that he presents himself as he is. What you see is what you get. We think that most people believe that he struggles with life just as much as we struggle. People feel they can relate to him. He doesn't just call himself a sinner, but he is not afraid to be seen going to Confession. He laughs, jokes, gets mad and is not afraid to say he doesn't know or needs to ask for help. I think we can all imagine him throwing a toy once or twice."
"It is inspiring and moving to see how this Pope has touched the hearts and reached the minds of so many, young and old. As they grow, they too will learn to walk with Christ and carry the Cross with Mary, for Jesus."
