Perspectives Daily - Atlantic Canada Catholic Bishops Talk With Pope Francis

March 20, 2017
On Friday, the Pope presided over a penitential service at St. Peter's Basilica in anticipation for the "24 Hours for the Lord" initiative. During the service, the Pope himself went to confession and heard confessions of three men and four women. The service took place one week before all churches around the world are asked to offer the sacrament of Confession, a request made by the Pontifical Council for the Promoting of the New Evangelization. The theme of the initiative this year comes from the Gospel according to St Matthew: ‘I desire Mercy’
People around the world can show their support for the initiative by using the "#24hoursfortheLord" hashtag.
The 10 bishops of Canada's Atlantic region made their "ad limina" visits and pilgrimage to the Vatican last week where, they had the opportunity to spent time with the Pope. Last Thursday, the Bishops explained to the Pope, the pastoral guidelines they have issued in response to Canada’s legalization of assisted suicide. We bring this story to you from CNS
“We should not be worried about Medjugorje”, is the message from Archbishop Henryk Hoser, the Papal envoy sent to investigate the pastoral needs in Medjugorje. In an interview with the online publication Aleteia, the Archbishop says that, “If Marian devotion has flourished in Medjugorje, if such multitudes arrive there, it is therefore a place where veneration will continue, since Our Lady can be venerated everywhere”. However in the interview, the Archbishop points out that although, “the Church has not yet spoken on the authenticity of the apparitions and we should calmly wait for the final position. This is by no means the first situation when the Church is slow to take a decision, especially given that the form of the Marian apparitions in Medjugorje significantly differs from that of earlier well-known apparitions.
We end today with just a reminder that tonight is the second night of a 4 night Lenten Mission on the theme: "The Parables of Jesus" at St.Theresa's Parish at 2559 Kingston Rd. in Scarborough. This mission will be led by Fr. Thomas Rosica, CEO of the Salt + Light TV and runs every evening till this Wednesday March 22 and will conclude with a blessing with a St. Therese relic on the last day. The event will start at 7:30 so don’t be late.
Now if you can’t make it, we will broadcast the mission here on S+L TV during the fifth week of Lent, so be sure to check out our online schedule listed here.
And that is all that we have time for today… Thank you for joining us and we’ll see you again next tomorrow.
