On July 9th, South Sudan will celebrate its Independence day. Many things hang in the balance for this country; most of the tension hedges on who will gain access to the rich mineral deposits that lie on the border between North and South Sudan.

As we wait to see if violence will erupt again, we consider how we are called to be involved in nation-building in South Sudan.

Join Pedro Guevarra-Mann on the weekly edition of Perspectives as he speaks with Fr. Valerian Shirima SJ and Fr. Fratern Masawe SJ, who are no strangers to this type of work. The two, are both former Provincials of the Eastern Africa Jesuit Province and former Presidents of the Jesuit Superiors of Africa and Madagascar. Together Frs. Shirima and Masawe share their thoughts on the Jesuits work: in universities, parishes, seminaries, refugee camps – wherever they are called – in South Sudan.
