Witness: Cardinal-designate Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R.

Joseph Tobin was born on May 3, 2952 in Detroit, Michigan, the eldest of thirteen children of Joseph W. Tobin (†January 28, 1977) and Marie Terese Kerwin. He attended elementary school in Detroit and St. Joseph’s Prep College in Edgerton, Wisconsin. He received a BA in Philosophy from Holy Redeemer College in Waterford, Wisconsin in 1975 and a Masters of Religious Education (1977) & Masters Divinity (1979) from Mount Saint Alphonsus Seminary in Esopus, NY. On August 5, 1973, he professed vows as a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists). He professed perpetual vows in the Redemptorists on August 21, 1976, was ordained to the diaconate on April 30, 1978; and ordained priest on June 1, 1978. From June 1979 – July 1984, Fr. Tobin served as associate pastor at Holy Redeemer Parish, Detroit Michigan, and also served as episcopal vicar in the Archdiocese of Detroit from 1980-86. From July 1984 – July 1990, he served as pastor of Holy Redeemer Parish in Detroit and from July 1990-October 1991, he was pastor of St. Alphonsus Parish in Chicago.
Within his religious order, Fr. Tobin served as Provincial Consultor (1984-1990); General Consultor (Rome) (1991-1997); and Superior General (Rome) from 1997-2009. On August 2, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI named Fr. Tobin as the Archbishop Secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and as titular bishop of Obba. Fr. Tobin was ordained to episcopate October 9, 2010. On October 18, 2012, he was named by Pope Benedict XVI as Archbishop of Indianapolis. On December 3, 2012, he was installed at the sixth Archbishop of Indianapolis at SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral Archbishop Tobin speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese and was appointed by Holy Father to five Synods of Bishops (1998, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2008). This WITNESS Interview with Archbishop Tobin took place at the Vatican on March 26, 2012, while the Archbishop was the Secretary of the Congregation Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and as titular bishop of Obba. On October 9, 2016, Pope Francis named Archbishop Joseph Tobin to the College of Cardinals. Then on Monday, November 7, 2016, Tobin was appointed by Pope Francis as Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey.
