Mark K. Shriver, born February 17, 1964, is the son of Sargent Shriver and Eunice Kennedy, the sister of John, Robert and Ted Kennedy. He served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates for two consecutive terms, from 1995 to 2003. He is currently president of Save the Children Action Network in Washington, D.C. His New York Times and Washington Post bestselling memoir, A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver, was published in June 2012 and received a 2013 Christopher Award.
In this riveting WITNESS interview with Fr. Thomas Rosica, this young, articulate, distinguished member of the Kenney family openly shares how he grew “disillusioned” with the Roman Catholic Church until Pope Francis came along in 2013 and breathed new life into it for him. As Shriver followed the pope’s travels, gestures and words, he wrote: “I started to emerge from my Catholic funk.” He decided to embark on writing a book about Pope Francis by traveling to Argentina and Italy to discover how Jorge Mario Bergoglio grew into a change agent in one of the world’s most entrenched religious organizations. The result is Pilgrimage: My Search for the Real Pope Francis. In the process of writing the book, Shriver rediscovered a Church in which he could believe again and learned some powerful lessons in humility and mercy. Mark is married to Jeanne, and they have three children, Molly, Tommy and Emma, in Maryland.
