Pray with Pope Francis Reflection - November 2024

Fr. Edmund Lo, SJ

Monday, November 11, 2024

My brothers and sisters: In this month of November, Pope Francis asks us to pray for anyone who has lost a child; we pray that all parents who mourn the loss of a son or daughter find support in their community and receive peace and consolation from the Holy Spirit.
This prayer intention can really touch a nerve. Indeed; the loss of a child is too painful to even bring up, and others are too afraid to mention it. No words of consolation seem to be enough with the death of a child.
Recall the slaughtering of the holy innocents by King Herod, as Saint Matthew describes:  “A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.”
Let us fight the temptation of trying to turn the need for prayer and solidarity into a problem to be solved. There are times when there is nothing to be “done”, and that we are simply being invited into the uncomfortable situation of suffering with those who suffer. Then what are we to do?
We can begin with a short written note to the parents to simply express our sorrow, and tell them that we are actively praying for the repose of their child and for their consolation amidst their grief. We can discreetly refer them to support groups for grieving parents when the timing is right.
We can also offer a rosary for this intention on Tuesdays or Fridays of this month when we contemplate the Sorrowful Mysteries. Our Lady of Sorrows is well acquainted with our grief, as she mourned the death of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us call upon our Mother in heaven for intercession. May God bless you today.
