A big day for the Church in Québec

Jenna Murphy

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

Yesterday, the Holy See released the news of three new episcopal appointments for the Church in Québec.
Bishop André Gazaille has been named bishop of Nicolet, Québec. The population of Nicolet is nearly 210 000, over 95% of whom are Roman Catholic. Bishop Gazaille was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Montreal in 1971.
Throughout his priesthood, he served at the Grande Séminaire in the University of Montréal followed by the pastoring of several Quebec parishes. Bishop Gazaille then served as the auxiliary bishop of Montreal since 2006.
But this doesn’t mean the seat is empty in Montréal.
The Holy Father has named two new bishops as auxiliaries for the archdiocese.  Frs. Christian Lepine and Thomas Dowd will now take over Bishop Gazaille's previous post.
Fr. Christian Lepine was ordained in 1983 and Bishop-elect Dowd was ordained a priest in 2001. Both clergy are Montreal natives.
