An Amazing Focus

David Naglieri

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

British politician and abolitionist William WilberforceWhat is a real hero? Who should we aspire to be like? How do great men and women of faith impact their respective eras? On Wednesday's edition of Catholic Focus John Ignatowicz and I explore the life and impact of William Wilberforce, the British politician and abolitionist credited with leading the campaign to end the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.
In March 2007 the world celebrated the 200th anniversary of the end of the slave trade. Two centuries ago William Wilberforce was finally triumphant after an 18 year struggle to outlaw the abomination of trafficking in human beings.
The new film Amazing Grace, profiled and reviewed in this Focus episode, captures the essence of Wilberforce's mission and struggle to see God's view of humanity enshrined in the laws of nations. Today, that struggle continues as many brave men and women, inspired by their Christian faith, are on the front lines speaking out for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Did you ever feel helpless in the face of evil? Did the constant flow of sad and tragic news of injustice and atrocities ever discourage you? Then I encourage you to watch Catholic Focus Wednesday at 7pm or 11pm ET (with an encore presentation at the same times on Sunday, April 15th) and see how one man saved millions and how the hope of Christians can give light to a darkened world.
