Being Very Human

Matthew Harrison

Thursday, June 12, 2008

Last Friday I shared an excerpt from a devotion on the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I just wanted to comment further on a particular line of the passage.
We must be very human, for otherwise we cannot be divine ...
I recently had some people turn down interviews because they did not feel worthy or holy enough to speak on the topic I was asking them to discuss.
It deeply saddened me. In fact, I was surprised at how much sorrow I felt inside. It wasn't so much that I didn't get the interview, that would work itself out, but it was the attitude that these people had. There was a sense of failure from these people: they weren't good enough. They could not accept their weaknesses. They would not accept their 'humanness.'
Yes, we can all be better, we can all grow in virtue, and improve. I'm certainly not saying that. But don't you think that we need to permit ourselves to be ourselves? To just be. To recognize that we are created by God -- not created by myself. That I am a son or a daughter of God, our loving Father.
It frustrates me sometimes to admit who I am, "warts and all" as the saying goes. In fact, if you're like me, perhaps you try to hide aspects of yourself -- we're concerned about how we will look before people; before friends, before loved ones, and even before God. (... which is really kind of silly because since God created us, chances are He knows us inside and out!)
I think this tends to cause more grief than it's worth. We could use our energy in a much better way.
Like loving ourselves and accepting who we are. Like changing the things we can change; a habit of gossiping, or our impatience.
Like accepting that we are frail... and that's okay.
Like presenting myself to God, the way I am, the way he created him, and allowing Him to transform me... His Heart, moving in mine.
