CNS Vatican Report: A Charitable Makeover

Matthew Harrison

Friday, May 27, 2011

Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga describes Caritas Internationalis as more than a nongovernmental organization.
"Caritas is a sign of the love of God for all humanity. It is a love that knows no bounds or boundaries." said the Honduran prelate of Tegucigalpa at the organization's general assembly held this week in Rome.
At the assembly, Cardinal Rodriguez was re-elected as the president of Caritas. It will be his second four-year term as the leader of the Church's network of charitable agencies.
Delegates also elected Michel Roy, of the French charity Secours Catholique, as their secretary general.
Roy will replace Leslie-Ann Knight.
Catholic News Service's Cindy Wooden and John Thavis report some delegates were upset that the Vatican Secretariat of State would not allow a second term for Knight.
They discuss this, and the Caritas makeover, in this week's Vatican Report.
