Word for Word: From Darkness to Hope

Gillian Kantor

Thursday, November 18, 2010

Many of us are trapped in a fallacy – one that propels us into despair and robs us of confidence. The falsehood? We believe that if we really understood God’s love for us, if we really grasped the truths of hope and unconditional love, then we would never have dark days, never feel sadness or depression.
Well, the reality is that even the holiest among us know darkness. We need to look only to Mother Teresa, whose letters, collected into the book Come Be My Light, revealed that even the saints who walk among us experience the despair that comes from feeling far from God.
In our upcoming episode of Word for Word, we explore these feelings of darkness and the movement toward hope. We begin with an interview with Sr. Marie Paul Curley, Paulist Sister and author of See Yourself Through God’s Eyes: 52 Meditations to Grow in Self-Esteem. Her guided meditations and reflections on personal experiences teach us that we are not alone in our suffering and we can come to a better understanding of God’s love for each of us by sitting with Scripture. And the Writer’s Block segment guides us toward not only hope but unity with our Christian brothers and sisters as we are introduced to the work of the Canadian Council of Churches on the questions of suffering and hope in their document The Bruised Reed.
Watch Word for Word on Friday Nov. 19th at 9pm ET.
