From the Rock to Steeltown: A Shuffling of Bishops in Hamilton

Matthew Harrison

Friday, September 24, 2010

Ten days ago you may have seen a note on our Facebook page congratulating and offering prayers for Bishop Bergie as the new Bishop of St. Catharines.  Bishop Bergie had been serving as the Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General of the Diocese of Hamilton.Hamilton
But that wasn't the only change to take place in Hamilton.
The Vatican announced today that Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop Douglas Crosby, OMI, as the new Bishop of Hamilton.  Bishop Crosby has been serving out east as Bishop of Corner Brook and Labrador.  He will succeed Bishop Anthony F. Tonnos, who is retiring, having reached the mandatory retirement age for Bishops.  The 75-year old Bishop has served Hamilton since 1984.
Bishop Crosby was the first Bishop of the newly established Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador, having been appointed in 2007.  He is the CCCB's Co-Treasurer, and has been involved in liturgical questions on a national and international level.  The Diocese of Hamilton has a Catholic population of 559,290 in 155 parishes and missions, served by 122 diocesan priests, 88 priests who are members of religious orders, 24 permanent deacons and 281 religious Sisters and Brothers.
We extend our congratulations and prayers to Bishop Crosby, and of course, extend our thanks to Bishop Tonnos for his service to the Church, wishing him well in his retirement!
For more on the appointment, read the release from the CCCB here.
