Holding steadfast at June's Lectio Divina

Matthew Harrison

Friday, June 10, 2011

We've reached the end of the fourth season of Lectio Divina.
In June's Lectio Divina, Archbishop Thomas Collins concludes his reflection on the Letter of St. James meditating on James 4:11-5:20.
At one point the Archbishop highlights patience. Not the kind of patience we think of when being cut off in traffic or waiting in line at a grocery store but a patience for the long haul. James writes:
Be patient, therefore, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Behold the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it, until it receives the early and the late rain. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble, brethren, against one another, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the doors. As an example of suffering and patience, brethren, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we call those happy who were steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.
Archbishop Collins points out that Job wasn't exactly the most patient person. However, he remained steadfast and trusting in the Lord, regardless of how things were unfolding in his life. It's an attitude, says the Archbishop, that would be good for us to adopt.
Watch the Archbishop's reflection on patience, judging others, and more, in the broadcast edition of Lectio Divina with Archbishop Thomas Collins: Letter of St. James Sunday, June 12th, at 8:30pm ET or Wednesday, June 15th, at 8:00pm ET.
