Pope Benedict XVI stirred excitement at the end of his general audience today. He announced that he will be elevating 24 prelates to the rank of Cardinal. The red hat will be going to:POPE-CARDINALS
  • Archbishop Raymond Leo Burke who currently serves as Prefect of the Apostolic Signature, the Church's highest tribunal. He is also a member of the Congregation for Bishops. He was previously Archbishop of St. Louis.
  • Archbishop Donald Wuerl, the current Archbishop of Washington D.C. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1966. He served as auxiliary Bishop of Seattle until 1987 and Bishop of Pittsburgh until 2006. He also serves as the Chancellor of Catholic University of America.
  • Pope Benedict has also named Coptic Patriarch Antonio Naguib to the College of Cardinals. Patriarch Naguib was ordained to the priesthood in 1960. He served as Bishop of Minya, Egypt in 1977 and remained in that post until 2002. He was appointed Patriarch of the Coptic Church in 2006 by Pope Benedict. Patriarch Naguib was named Recording Secretary to the Synod of Bishops on the Middle East. His appointment to the College of Cardinals coincides with the final week of the Synod of Bishops. Several Synod participants have suggested that Patriarchs should be automatically included in the College of Cardinals.
  • Archbishop Angelo Amato is the head of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. He was ordained a Salesian priest in 1967. He served as Professor of Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical Salesian University as well as dean of the Faculty of Theology and Vice Rector of the University. From 2002 until 2008 he served as secretary for the congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
  • Archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi will also receive a red hat in November. He serves as head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, the Pontifical Comission for Cultural Goods of the Church, and the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology. He will be in Canada later this month, offering an address at the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops' plenary assembly in Cornwall, Ontario
  • Archbishop Kurt Koch, who recently took over as head of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity will also become a Cardinal. The Swiss prelate was ordained in 1982 and became Bishop of Basel, Switzerland in 1995. He was appointed to his current post this past July.
  • Archbishop Robert Sarah currently serves as the head of Cor Unum, the Vatican's Charity arm. He was ordained a priest in Guinea in 1969 and served as Archbishop of Conkary until 2001, when he was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
  • Archbishop Fortunato Baldelli is the Major Penitentiary of the Apostolic Penitentiary, the office that deals with the most sensitive matters of conscience as well as with the practice of indulgences. He was appointed to his current post in June of 2009.
  • Archbishop Velasio de Paolis is the President of the Prefecture of Economic Affairs for the Holy See. He was ordained a Scalabrinian priest in 1961. He served as rector of the International College in Rome and has taught at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Urbanian University. In 2003 he was appointed to the Apostolic Signatura, the Vatican's Supreme Court. In 2008 he was appointed Presisdent of the Prefecture of Economic Affairs. This past July he was appointed the Apostolic Visitor to the Legionaries of Christ.
  • Archbishop Mauro Piacenza is the head of the of the Congregation for the Clergy. He was named to that post this past month.
  • Archbishop Paolo Sardi of Italy is the Vice-Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church and he is the Pro-Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of the Knights of Malta.
  • There's also Archbishop Reinhard Marx of Munich and Freising;
  • Archbishop Kazimierz Nyez of Warsaw;
  • The Archbishop of Palermo, Sicily - Paolo Romeo;
  • Archbishop Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya of Kinshasha, in the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the few non-Italian appointed Cardinals;
  • Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith Patabendige Don of Colombo, Sri Lanka;
  • Archbishop Raymundo Damasceno Assis of Aparecida, Brazil;
  • Archbishop Francesco Monterisi is the Archpriest of Saint Paul outside the Walls;
  • Archbishop Medado Joseph Mazombwe of Lusaka, Zambia;
  • Archbishop Raul Eduardo Vela Chiriboga, Archbishop Emeritus of Quito, Ecuador;
Pope Benedict also announced the elevation of three prelates who are over the age of 80 and will be ineligible to vote in a conclave. They are:
  • Monsignor Domenico Bartolucci, Maestro of the Sistine Chapel Choir;
  • Monsignor Walter Brandmüller is the president of the Pontifical Commission for Historical Science;
  • Bishop Elio Sgreccia, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life;
  • Archbishop Jose Manuel Estepa Llaurens, Emeritus Archbishop of the Military Ordinariate of Spain
The newly announced Cardinals will receive their rings and red zucchettos from the Holy Father during a special ceremony in Rome on November 20th.
