Loving Thy Neighbour

Matthew Harrison

Wednesday, May 2, 2007

"We know how to touch the moon or reach the stars, but we don’t find the best way to talk to one another. "
Don't those words from author Jacques Shore ring true? We have all sorts of advances in science and technology, we have all sorts of gizmos in our personal lives to keep us entertained, connected, and in-tune, but somehow we have fallen out of touch with our neighbour.
On tonight's episode of Word for Word, host Gillian Kantor sits down with Father Bill Clarke, S.J., to explore the theme of loving one's neighbour. The backdrop of the theme is Father Clarke's moving book "The Face of Friendship," which chronicles his thirteen year friendship with a rough-living man who shot off half of his face in a failed suicide attempt. The gentle Father Clarke Father Clarke talks about his friendship with Byron, his time on the Ignatian Farm Community, and shares his thoughts about loving others who may not have felt love.
In the Writer's Block segment, Jacques Shore discusses his memorable Friday night Shabbat that he shared at the Papal residence. Shore turned that experience into the children's story, told from the point of view of an 11-year old boy, in his work "Friday Night with the Pope."
Word for Word airs Wednesday at 8pm and midnight ET. The 'Loving Thy Neighbour' episode will also repeat on Saturday, May 5th, at 10pm and midnight ET.
