Pope Benedict XVI's Ash Wednesday homily

Alicia Ambrosio

Wednesday, February 22, 2012

Today Pope Benedict XVI led a Lenten station procession and celebrated Ash Wednesday Mass. The Lenten stations are a Roman tradition dating back to the fifth century. The Bishop of Rome would visit specific churches at specific times during the year. While that practice has fallen away somewhat, what remains is a fixed schedule of 40 churches that take turns opening their doors for a special prayer service during Lent. The first of those is Saint Anselm. After the Lenten Station, the Holy Father processed to the Basilica of Santa Sabina just a few meters away to celebrate mass. You can listen to his homily again by watching the video above.
