Pope Benedict XVI will open the Synod of Bishops for the Middle East with Mass this Sunday in St. Peter's Basilica.
MIDEAST-HOPESThe Holy Father is hopeful that the Synod, which runs until October 24th, will provide an opportunity to deepen bonds between members of the local Churches of the Middle East and the universal Church, and raise awareness of the struggles of Christians in the region.
The working sessions begin on Monday.  On Wednesday the synod will hear from a rabbi, and on Thursday from two Muslim guests.
Salt + Light's Vatican correspondent Alicia Ambrosio will provide reports from Rome.
One Canadian Archbishop is participating in the two week gathering -- Archbishop Thomas Collins of Toronto. He spoke about his involvement in the Synod on the Thursday, October 7th daily Perspectives -- watch it here.
Tune into Salt + Light Sunday morning, October 10th, for a live broadcast of the opening Mass at 3:30am ET, or catch the encore presentation at 10:30am ET.
