The Pope and Radical Islam

David Naglieri

Saturday, October 6, 2007

The Pope and Radical IslamEye on the Church, the investigative series I produce for Salt + Light Television, is known to tackle controversial issues. Thus far we have explored hot button topics such as Pope Pius XII and the Holocaust, Clergy Sex Abuse, the abolishment of Catholic education in Newfoundland, and the challenge Catholic Politicians face bringing their faith to bear in the political sphere. This Sunday at 8:00 pm ET we delve once again into a controversial matter with the premiere of "Pope Benedict, Radical Islam and the West."
In September of 2006 Pope Benedict traveled to his homeland of Bavaria. His trip was billed as a papal homecoming, but pageantry and celebration quickly turned into damage control after the Holy Father delivered a speech at the University of Regensburg on faith and reason. He quoted a medieval emperor who was critical of Islam, and his comments sparked anger throughout the Muslim world.
That is our starting point in this week’s edition of Eye on the Church as we explore the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and its impact on the Catholic Church and society at large. In what ways does Pope Benedict XVI’s thought differ from Pope John Paul II? What is the significance and impact of his comments at the University of Regensburg? We will explore those questions by speaking to John Allen, Vatican Affairs expert and the author of two books on Pope Benedict. The show also features interviews with popular TV host and columnist Michael Coren, John Thompson of the Mackenzie Institute, Hussein Hamdani a Muslim lawyer and peace activist, and Fr. David Warren of Scarboro Missions.
Tune in this Sunday at 8:00 ET for an exclusive look into the world of Radical Islam and the mind of Pope Benedict.
