How Christmas began with one girl’s “Yes, Lord!”

Louisa Florentin

Tuesday, November 23, 2021

Isn’t it crazy how not too long ago, we were journeying through Lent? And now we’re just five days away from Advent.
For some, this season might look like attending daily Mass, especially in the week or so leading up to Christmas. Others might volunteer at a local soup kitchen to make sure the homeless stay warm and fed during the colder months. Many families may start decorating their homes and playing nostalgic Christmas songs to get into the mood. We may prepare our hearts and homes differently during Advent, but we all await the same thing: the birth of Jesus Christ.

How one YES changed salvation history
When you think of it, the Christmas story really begins with a brave “YES” from a girl named Mary. If it were not for her obedience and docility to God’s call, we wouldn’t have Advent or Christmas, and salvation history would look very different — or perhaps may not even exist at all. It is through Mary that we continually learn (and re-learn) the power of a grace-filled “Yes” to God.

What is God calling you to do this Advent and Christmas?
Maybe it’s something small, like refraining from wasting food or spending money on things you don’t really need. Or maybe it’s something more difficult, like finally talking to that friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in a while, or admitting you were wrong about something. Whatever it is, I hope, like Mary, you find the Spirit-given courage to say, “YES.” You never know where that might lead!

A chance for kids to say, “Yes, Lord!” this season
Here at Salt + Light Media, we’re saying “Yes, Lord!” again this Advent and Christmas, with Season 2 of our children’s show premiering in three days. It’s a 25-minute show structured as a Liturgy of the Word and aimed at reaching children ages 4-7. Kids, families, teachers, and students who tuned in to our Lenten season earlier this year will hear the familiar “Yes, Lord!” theme song, along with both old and new songs this time around. Deacon Pedro (and also his pal, Mr. Monk) will be back with his reflections on the Sunday Gospel, along with lessons and activities to wrap up each episode.
