Rodney on the Sea of Galilee
The Sea of Galilee is located in the east side of the Galilee, in the north of Israel. There are many stories related to Jesus along the Sea of Galilee. For instance, he called his first disciples by the sea, preaching the parable of the sower, the walking on the water, the calming of a storm at sea, etc. The calming of a storm at sea is one of my favourite stories.
When we read the gospel on Mark 4:35-41, we can very easily to understand that Jesus is Messiah; he is the God of creation.
The disciples woke Jesus and said to him,
“Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Quiet! Be still!”
The wind ceased and there was great calm.
Yes, it shows his almighty. However, do we think about why the disciples fear about the storm? They are fishermen, and they were fishing everyday in the Sea of Galilee. And, Jesus is a carpenter only. Is it strange?
The question we have to ask is, are they really feared about the storm? What is the main reason for Jesus to calm the storm?
Jesus is not just calming the storm. He calmed their fear, the fear from their heart, the fear of crossing to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. They don’t know why they have to leave their comfort zone to somewhere they never consider to go, to somewhere which is the living place of the Gerasenes, the Gentiles. Isn’t that Messiah comes to save the people in Israel? This is what they are really feared about. Later on, in the next chapter, what Jesus did is the healing of the Gerasene Demoniac.
Go back to our reflection question, disciples which are represented us, they put an expectation on Jesus already, they all set Jesus comes to save the Israel only. Are we accepting something that what God will do of us which is out of our expectation? Are we full of trust in God?
Jesus asked the disciples,
“Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?”
Let us keep asking ourselves, Do I fully trust in God? When we proclaim our faith in the Mass, do we really believe in Him?
God Bless!
