Can priests be active musicians?

Andrew Santos

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Music has a special way of drawing people together, whether it be in Church at Mass or in the public realm. But can priests be active musicians? More than that, do priests have an obligation to promote music in the life of the Church?
Fr. Robert Galea is a Maltese-Australian singer and songwriter. He has completed five albums thus far: More of You (2004), Closer (2006), What A Day (2008), Divine Mercy Chaplet [Featuring Gary Pinto and Natasha Pinto] (2010) and Reach Out (2011), as well as a live concert DVD and CD entitled, Fr Robert Galea, Reach Out Live (2011).
Fr. Galea completed his seminary studies in Melbourne in 2010 and is currently serving as Associate Pastor at St. Brendan's Catholic Church in Shepparton in the Diocese of Sandhurst.
This week on Perspectives: The Weekly Edition, guest host Andrew Santos speaks with Fr. Galea and Jason Giuliani, who, at the time of this episode, were in Canada on a music tour. Giuliani is a high school religion teacher from Victoria, Australia. Both of them had the chance to speak about their music ministry, their travels, the priesthood and their work with young people.
Join us for this discussion Friday on Perspectives Weekly at 7:00 and 11:00 pm ET / 8:00 pm PT. In the meantime, take part in the discussion on Facebook.
