While this year's World Youth Day is being hosted by Spain, Canadians held the distinction of holding the first official event. On Tuesday morning, a special national gathering was held at Palacio de Deportes, better known as the Love and Life Site.
The prayer service, organized by Salt + Light's Fr. Thomas Rosica, CSB, featured a homily by Archbishop Terrence Prendergast of Ottawa. Together with Archbishop Gérald Lacroix of Quebec City, the presiding Archbishop led a prayer of commissioning for pilgrims. About 22 bishops joined the 5000 young people present, who represented over 85% of registered pilgrims from Canada. Music was performed by the Maltese priest-musician Fr. Robert Galea.
Salt + Light will air the Prayer Service for Canadians today at 12:30pm ET (9:30am PT). The broadcast will be followed by the national gathering for Australian pilgrims and will conclude with a special concert from WYD. The Canadian national gathering is also streaming on WYD Central.
