Easter Message 2023
Dare to Have Hope

“And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” (Luke 24:25-26)

“Slow of heart to believe” in the joy of Easter makes us slow to have hope. Christ Jesus has overcome the seemingly inevitable grip of death. His resurrection assures us the confidence that death does not and cannot have the final say. For Easter means that ‘nothing will separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ (Romans 8: 31-39). Hence, our hope has its foundation in the amazing love of God manifested in the risen Lord for all walks of life in this world.

What is advisable is not to allow hardship or evil thoughts to corrupt our hearts or crush our spirits, lest we could become agents of death. What is called for is “a positive and life-giving culture” that enables us to face hardships in life in some constructive and sustainable ways. Moreover, we need a positive culture so to become incubators of hope and transformation.

It is a fact that many people in Hong Kong are still struggling for hope amid their ongoing suffering. As the economy has just begun to pick up, many people struggling at the lower socioeconomic strata still need assistance and the psychological boost from their social communities and “neighbours”. These individuals should not be perceived as burdens of society but as intermediaries of heavenly blessings on those who come to their aid.

So, for those who do not need their consumer vouchers, there are those whose spirit will be lifted by the generous sharing of their few thousand dollars. Imagine how much consolation, confidence and hope their sharing can make possible for the ones in need of those extra dollars. God has emptied Himself for us so that we can be eternally consoled in His name and love.

From news reports published in last December, there were around 6,000 arrests due to the violent outbreaks in 2019. They are waiting to see whether the police will charge them or not. When will they see the light? Charge or no charge, they will be signs showing them how to move on. Waiting endlessly will not help them or our society to move toward healing. Some may want to seek justice through retributive means. However, it is through compassion and leniency on lighter offences that can give hope and positive energy to our wounded community. We have seen how hatred and violence have brought the stench of death to our beloved Hong Kong. Now, we should lean on compassion and magnanimity to reinforce the fragrance of life in our recovering Hong Kong.

Caring for the elderly, especially those “left behind” or living alone must be a priority. Connecting with those who care about them will enable them to feel a deeper sense of generativity for others, being appreciated by others, and being connected with the youth, the extension of their future. All these will contribute to a better sense of connectedness and hope, and the meaning of life. It should not be surprising that youth and the elderly are better fit for each other than the other age groups for them.

We have been bidding farewell to many friends and family members who have left or decided to leave Hong Kong for their aspirations. While we wish them all the best, their departure has created noticeable voids in different layers of our social fabric that are not easy to fill. And we do not know when those voids will be filled. But we can be hopeful that our God, who has bestowed His blessings over Hong Kong throughout our history, will not abandon us who call upon Him sincerely, seeking for a fairer and freer homeland for everyone dwelling in it.

Finally, we are living in an anxious and messy world dominated by an entrenched political mentality through power plays, bullying, accusations, threats and sanctions, etc. We desire a new world with level playing fields, empathy and respect, dialogic culture, loving kindness, unity in plurality, better distributions of resources, environmental consciousness, etc. Of course, we are not so naïve to expect dramatic positive changes, but incremental development with sincere and strategic efforts will be nice.

Our future generations need to have hope from us. We must make it possible for each other to have hope for a better future.

Happy Easter to you all in Hong Kong and beyond!

“What the world needs now is love, sweet love. It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of….”  That was in the lyrics of a popular song back in 1965, “What the World Needs Now Is Love.” I believe most of us, if not everyone, would agree with that. We live in a world culture where egoistic love seems more evident than altruistic and inclusive love, which we celebrate with Christmas. The love of Christmas is about the Son of God, who empties himself, enters into our history to be with us, and through that, becomes our future.

But besides love, our world also needs hope, real hope that stems from the love of Christmas and gives us the confidence to face the darkness that seems to have besieged our world.

Geopolitical tensions are in the daily news, and nowhere is it more noticeable than the atrocious Russo-Ukrainian War. When and how will it end? The intensifying geopolitical tensions in east Asia should also be an area of growing concern. The flagging global economy plus the geopolitics are unsettling our hearts and unnerving our spirits. The wavering prospects of 2023, between light and darkness, hope and despair, are contributing to a growing sense of hopelessness and frustration around the world. What can we do to make a difference when confronted with these harsh realities?

Through mutual care, support and self-giving, instead of self-interests coming first. After all, the best gift at Christmas is the giving of oneself for the betterment of others.

However, this self-giving action should be paired with respect and empathy. We have seen well-meaning adults and parents wanting to give their best to their younger ones, including their well-thought-out plans. Similarly, elderlies are increasingly lonely and depressed when protective measures have cut them off from their loved ones during the pandemic. Yet, these are not appreciated or welcomed by their intended recipients. Instead, we see young people becoming miserable, resentful, despairing or totally inert as a sign of protest. And elderlies have passed away in isolation without their loved ones accompanying them.

The desirable way of giving is through down-to-earth accompaniment to achieve empathic and mutual understanding between givers and recipients. Then the givers will know how best to give themselves to their recipients. And how best to help them see hope.

A gift of love is in fact a gift of life! May we find the best way to become givers of such gift to our recipients. A heart-warming Christmas and a hope-filled 2023 to you all!

+ Bishop Stephen Chow, S.J.

When Bishop Wu assumed his episcopacy, his Cantonese heavily spiced with Hakka plus Mandarin ascents was a great amusement for some but also a contemptuous point for others. His gentlemanly and discrete manner was sometimes criticized for not being outspoken. Yet it was his prudent and wise leadership that had led the Catholic community to publicly express our concerns and hope for a better China. Still remember what took place in the racecourse at Happy Valley in 1989?

But the most endearing qualities of Cardinal Wu to many and to me were his open-mindedness and inclusive mindset. He encouraged new ideas and experimentation, which could not go without, especially when creativity was required for discerning developments. This mindset should still be needed for us today when we are developing synodality for the desirable future of our Church according to the vision of the Second Vatican Council.

Yet, he was ready to accept the emotional costs of his pastoral leadership, not shying away from unpopular but important decisions. Even though that would mean being misunderstood by his own and others, his faith was clearly in his Lord. Being able to serve his God was a true blessing to him, though his actions might appear to be losses to others at the time. Losing for his God was actually a win to him. Are we willing to lose for God?
Cardinal Wu, please pray with us for your Diocese, your Church, your Hong Kong and China in your eternal home, especially when different levels of healings and reconciliations are still needed in our faith community as well as Hong Kong, our beloved home city.

Bishop Ha and I have paid a visit to Cardinal Zen last Sunday (15/5) to show him our concern. Cardinal was in good spirit and he enjoyed his inner peace during our visit. He understood that we and many others have great concern and care for him.

Today (18/5) he sent me a letter expressing his gratitude to me. In the same letter, he asks me to inform his friends the following message:

“[You] saw me in deep peace during your visit. I hope everyone can go with the flow [take things as they come]! Did not the Risen Lord often said ‘Peace be with you’ to his apostles? Peace is grace and sharing peace with others is our duty. Bless you all!”

The Cardinal asks everybody that there is no need to show public support for his messages. Keep on praying should be sufficient.

Please feel free to share this with friends.
