François de Laval - apostle of America
This documentary tells the story of François de Laval, the first bishop of Quebec and founder of the Church in North America. His faith was of epic proportions equal to the size of a continent.
Sent to New France in the 17th century as an Apostolic Vicar, this French missionary arrived in Quebec in 1659. He actively participated not only in the religious growth of New France, but also in its political development.
Inspired by the Council of Trent, Bishop de Laval pursued great dreams. He promoted the education of young people and the formation of priests. Committed to the Indigenous peoples, he courageously defended their rights. Detached of material possessions, he gave what he owned to the poor. A tireless visionary, he founded a new Church in a new country. A modern man, he adapted the ecclesial structure within the context of his particular mission and for the purpose of Evangelization.
His works are numerous and his legacy is significant. The Church today offers us a model in this new saint.
St. François de Laval was canonized by Pope Francis in April 2014.
“A powerful testimony. Far from simply being a story of the past, this documentary shows us how François de Laval still speaks to us and walks among us today.”
