Subject Matters - Pilgrimage: My Search for the Real Pope Francis
In Pilgrimage, Shriver retraces Francis’s personal journey, revealing the origins of his open, unpretentious style and explaining how it revitalized Shriver’s own faith and renewed his commitment to the Church. To help us understand how Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis, Shriver travels to Bergoglio’s native Argentina to meet with the people who knew him as a child, as a young Jesuit priest, and as a reformist bishop. Shriver visits the confessional where Bergoglio first felt called to a faith-based life and takes us to the humble parish where the future pontiff’s pastoral career began: in a church created from a converted vegetable shed in an area just outside the city of Buenos Aires. In these impoverished surroundings, Bergoglio answered Christ’s call to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and shelter the homeless, following the example set by his papal namesake, St. Francis of Assisi. Shriver explores how Francis’s commitment has struck a chord in the hearts of millions who long to make faith, love, humility, and mercy part of their lives as they go out into the world to serve and learn from the most marginalized.

Witness - Arturo Mari
Arturo Mari probably spent more time with St. John Paul II than anyone else. He worked more than 53 years as a papal photographer and produced millions of photographs of Pius XII, John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I, John Paul II and Benedict XVI. He began taking pictures for the popes when he was 16 years and recalled the beginning of his career, when he accompanied Pius XII to Vatican Radio on the outskirts of the Vatican City State. The short journey was like an international trip for a Pontiff as discreet as Pius XII. Mari also attended the opening sessions of Vatican II and the first surprising trips outside the Vatican of now St. John XXIII to hospitals, prisons and even to the new Roman airport. But the Italian photographer’s international adventures began with John Paul II. In this exculsive WITNESS interview with Fr. Thomas Rosica, you will meet a Vatican insider who takes us behind the scenes of the sometimes mysterious and secretive Vatican and offers us some amazing portraits of the human side of the Church.
