Cardinal Patrick D’Rozario, C.S.C., Metropolitan Archbishop of Dhaka, Bangladesh, was born on October 1, 1943 in Padrishibpur, in the diocese of Chittagong. He is a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross and was ordained a priest on October 8, 1972. He was appointed the first Bishop of Rajshahi on May 21, 1990 by Pope John Paul II. On February 3, 1995, he was transferred to the see of Chittagong, the second largest in the country. On November 25, 2010, he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as coadjutor bishop of Dhaka, succeeding to the metropolitan see, on October 22, 2011. Since December 2011 he has served as president of the Bishops' Conference of Bangladesh, and in that capacity he participated in the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the family in October 2014.
Created and proclaimed Cardinal by Pope Francis in the consistory of November 19, 2016, he has the titular church of Nostra Signora del SS. Sacramento e Santi Martiri Canadesi in Rome. He is Bangladesh's first cardinal and the second religious of the Congregation of Holy Cross to be named to the College of Cardinals.
