Behind the Scenes with Salt + Light Media: Timothy Schmalz

Noel Ocol

Thursday, March 19, 2020

A few weeks ago, I got the opportunity to meet with Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz and talk to him about the inspiration behind a massive new 22-foot sculpture that he's currently working on called Let the Oppressed Go Free.
Timothy made headlines around the world when one of his art pieces, a massive three-ton sculpture depicting 140 migrants and refugees was unveiled at St. Peter’s Square on the 105th World Day of Migrants and Refugees last September.
Since then, I wanted to meet with him, thinking that it would be a great opportunity to film a segment for our monthly show, behold
He agreed to meet with us to talk about his newest piece, so off we went, embarking early in the morning on a 1.5-hour journey from Toronto to his studio in Elmira, Ontario.
Needless to say, the entire crew and I were completely amazed by what we saw: the first stage of what is to be a giant 22-foot-long sculpture, on the third floor of a massive turn-of-the-century factory building.  What a sight!
The complete segment of our trip to Timothy's studio in Elmira, Ontario, is part of March's episode of behold. He talks to us about the inspiration behind his new sculpture and why the fight against human trafficking is so near and dear to his heart.
So be sure to watch the show. It premieres on Thursday, March 19th at 8pm ET / 5pm PT on Salt + Light TV (click here to find out how to watch). Or watch it anytime after the broadcast on our website: saltandlighttv.org/behold.
I hope you enjoy the segment just as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you.
