… It’s Valentine’s Day, the day for romance, and what have I got to offer you for Catholic Focus tonight??? A lot of SILENCE….But wait, silence not too far off from the theme of love. Because lovers who love don’t always need so many words to say to each other. Being in each other’s presence is often enough.And remember the passage from Scripture, taken from the first book of Kings, chapter 19, verse 11, where the prophet Elijah was looking for the Lord? A strong wind came and then an earthquake, but God was neither in the wind nor in the earthquake. A fire came afterwards, but even then, God was not in the fire. And then a still small voice came, like a soft breeze. And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in a mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.The prophet Elijah recognized that God doesn’t come with all the pomp and majesty that people expect of the Messiah, the King of Kings, the Saviour. He usually comes silently, softly, and the heart can hear him when it is at peace.So tonight, I offer you a moment to share and reflect on the different experiences of silence, the different ways of reaching God who is Love.The World Community for Christian Meditation, directed by Fr. Laurence Freeman, a Benedictine monk, presents their reflections on the value and meaning of silence. Fellow Salt and Light producers Matthew Harrison and Michèle Nuzzo share their experiences of silence. Matthew has spent time in the Poustinia of Madonna House, with only water, bread, and Scripture.
