On Monday, March 19, Feast of St. Joseph, Salt and Light TV is proud to present live from St. Peter’s Basilica the Episcopal Ordination of Archbishop José Bettencourt.
Monsignor Jose Avelino Bettencourt was born in Velas, Azores, Portugal in 1962. He moved to Canada with his family at a very young age. Before his ordination, he studied theology at Dominican College, Ottawa and prepared for the priesthood at St. Paul University in Ottawa.He was ordained in 1993 for the Archdiocese of Ottawa. On July 1, 1999, He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and served at the Nunciature in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and in the Section for Relations with States at the Vatican Secretariat of State. Since 2012, he has served as Head of Protocol at the Vatican.
On February 26, 2018, Pope Francis appointed Monsignor Bettencourt titular archbishop of Cittanova, with the office of Apostolic Nuncio. He was then assigned to the Nunciatures of Armenia and Georgia. He speaks English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian.
