Ecumenical Update 2019
Friday, January 18, 2019 - The Catholic and Orthodox Churches have been separated for almost a thousand years. But since the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s and the historic meeting of Pope St. Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras, a new impulse for dialogue has defined the relationship. After fifty years of cordial relations and penetrating theological discussions, where does the dialogue stand? How have Pope Francis and current Patriarch Bartholomew shaped the dialogue? On the program today is Fr. Peter Avgeropoulos, the Director of Inter-Church Relations for the Greek Orthodox Church in Canada. Topics include: the relationship between ‘synodality’ and ‘primacy’ in the churches; the recently declared independent Orthodox Church in Ukraine and the subsequent schism with the Russian Orthodox Church; and the dynamics of working for Christian unity here in Canada. This is your Ecumenical Update 2019.
