Magisterium of the People

The Catholic Committee of Appalachia is a network of people who have been listening to the cries of the poor and the earth since 1970. Its hallmark: three pastoral letters published over the last forty years that have told the story of a land and people struggling for survival against a system of indifference and exploitation. The third pastoral letter, issued in 2015, did not come from the Catholic bishops of Appalachia, but from the people themselves. It was a bold and prophetic step, to listen attentively to the cries of the poor and of the earth, to bring the periphery into the center, and create new paths forward toward justice, peace and wholeness in their communities and for creation.

St. Patrick: Pilgrimage to Peace

Here is the true story of this fifth-century Christian who was brought to Ireland as a slave, where he laboured six long years before finally escaping. But after returning home, Patrick shocked his contemporaries by voluntarily returning to the place of his enslavement in order to bring the gospel message to the Irish people.

Active Catholics - Pilgrimages

What is a pilgrimage? A pilgrimage is a journey, usually undertaken to show devotion to ones faith. This episode of Active Catholics will follow three different pilgrimages. The first is a Mexican tradition that has been continued in Brooklyn, one that shows dedication to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The second is a journey to the Shrine of St. Frances Cabrini that took pilgrims over the Brooklyn Bridge and through the streets of NYC last November. The third pilgrimage is World Youth Day, which draws millions of young people every time it is held. This year a remarkable 3 million people flocked to Rio de Janeiro to share in a celebration of their faith with Pope Francis and Catholics from around the world.

Liberating a Continent: John Paul II and the Fall of Communism

One of historys greatest examples of the triumph of spiritual power over violence and oppression is vividly recounted in Liberating a Continent: John Paul II and the Fall of Communism, a new documentary film that poignantly captures the intricate role played by John Paul in the collapse of Communism and the liberation of Central and Eastern Europe. Featuring the unique insights of intellectual and cultural leaders such as papal biographer George Weigel, esteemed Polish historian Norman Davies, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus Carl Anderson, John Pauls lifelong assistant Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, Reagan National Security Advisor Richard Allen, and many othersthis inspiring film gives an inside look at the improbable downfall of one of historys most brutal regimes. Narrated by Jim Caviezel (Passion of the Christ, Person of Interest) and with original music by Joe Kraemer (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, Jack Reacher) this is the incredible story of one mans unwavering faith born of deep personal suffering, his steadfast defense of the dignity of the human person amidst the horrors of Nazi and Soviet Occupation, and his unyielding belief in the spiritual unity of Europe. Liberating a Continent convincingly reveals how these convictions toppled an evil empireand how they remain today the moral foundations for a prosperous and free Europe.
