Every Life Matters is a campaign sponsored by the Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton to promote the true dignity of life and death. It was launched by Archbishop Richard Smith in support of the Canadian Bishops' Life-Giving Love national campaign for palliative and home care and against euthanasia and assisted suicide. In each episode of this series, we hear personal witnesses from lay people, as well as Archbishop Smith’s teaching on a particular aspect of assisted suicide and euthanasia. These sessions were presented as “Conversations with the Archbishop,” recorded at five different parishes in the Archdiocese in the Easter season of 2016.

Episode 1: What’s it all about?

A look at the legal situation in Canada following the Supreme Court’s “Carter decision.” Special guests: Kate Faught, a lawyer specializing in estate litigation; and Dr. Anna Voeuk, a physician specializing in palliative care.

Episode 2: What’s wrong with assisted suicide and euthanasia?

Church teaching around life and death. Special guests:  Lisa Daniels, a young mother who tells her own personal story of finding meaning, purpose and happiness in life despite suffering debilitating pain; and Dr. Anna Voeuk, who speaks about the need for improved access to palliative care for all Canadians.

Episode 3: It’s my body, my choice

Church teaching around freedom, choice, and personal autonomy. Special guests: Father Eamonn McNerney, a hospital chaplain who shares his personal experience with a family whose loved one requested euthanasia; and Dr. Robert Hauptman, a specialist in pain management who maintains that with modern medical care, no patient should have to suffer intolerable pain.

Episode 4: I don’t want to suffer

The Christian understanding of the mystery of suffering. Special guests: Jeri and Chuck Marple, who tell us how their disabled daughter Mary has been a blessing in their lives;  and Dr. Anna Voeuk, who speaks on caring for the caregivers and families of those with severe illness or disability.

Episode 5: What must we do?

Four concrete ways Catholics can respond to contemporary attacks on the sanctity of life. Special guests: Mark Pickup, who tells of a very dark time when he came close to losing the will to live; and Dr. Anna Voeuk, who asks us all to defend doctors, nurses and pharmacists who refuse to participate in assisted suicide or euthanasia.
