Installation Mass of The Most Reverend Gary Michael Gordon as Bishop of Victoria
Gary Michael Gordon was born on June 10, 1957, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ordained to the priesthood on May 22, 1982, Fr. Gordon ministered for almost 24 years as pastor in the Archdiocese of Vancouver, developing a deep love for and collaboration with the people of the First Nations. On May 6, 2006, shortly after being named Bishop of Whitehorse, he received the name ‘Xyolhmetoxw’, from the Native Communities, meaning ‘taking care of the people’ in Halq’eméylem, the language of the Stó:lö Nation.
On June 14, 2014, Pope Francis appointed Most Reverend Gary Gordon as the 17th Bishop of Victoria. In his address to the newly installed bishop of Victoria, Archbishop Luigi Bonazzi, Apostolic Nuncio to Canada, spoke these words on Thursday evening, August 28, 2014 during the installation ceremony in St. Andrew’s Cathedral: “Bishop Gary, today I pray that may you have Augustine’s restless heart and Andrew’s perseverance and boldness of proclamation as you serve the Lord with gladness.”
